Plinth 2000 win export sales

British-made treatment couches

Medical-grade treatment couches are employed for all manner of health and beauty procedures, from minor surgery and gynaecology examinations, through physiotherapy and aromatherapy massages, to chiropody, chiropractic manipulation and tattoo artistry. They also take many different forms like portable couches for domiciliary use, multi-section models with adjustable back and leg rests, podiatry and gynae chairs with a divided leg arrangement, and tilt tables that rotate patients through to an almost 90° upright position.

Human bodies are much the same around the world and purpose-designed treatment couches are always in demand amongst overseas hospitals, medical practitioners, physio and acupuncture clinics, health and beauty spas, health centres and sports clubs. One company that is enjoying considerable expert success with its British-made adjustable treatment couches is Plinth 2000, based at Wetheringsett Manor in rural Suffolk. It has increased export sales four-fold over the last six years and currently has distribution in over 30 countries across five continents, including recently negotiated deals in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

“British goods are highly prized for quality and reliability around the world and we have had an excellent response to our purpose-built equipment that is designed and manufactured in this country,” says Plinth 2000 MD, Niall Dyer. “We have even made inroads into markets like the Republic of China, Hong Kong and Singapore, which are associated with producing cheaper couches, because they regard our products as more robust, dependable and fit-for-purpose.

“We estimate the UK treatment couch market is worth at least £15 million annually and if you replicate that across other overseas territories, there is clearly good export business to be won,” continues Niall. “So we are now looking for additional distributors who can give us new channels to market, not just in the mainstream medical profession, but in niche sectors like beauty, health spas, physiotherapy, traditional Chinese acupuncture and tattoo parlours.”

To this end, Plinth 2000 exhibits regularly at international healthcare shows, at which it displays one of its best-selling three-section couches upholstered with Union Jack livery, emphasising the brand’s British heritage and the tremendous scope for customising the colours, specification and fittings. The company has also made two senior appointments that are focused on growing the export business, with Brigitte Currin responsible for overseas distributors and Thomas Briggs providing specialist export consultancy.

As a reputable manufacturer of more than 20 years’ standing and an NHS approved supplier, Plinth 2000 has excellent customer credentials in the medical industry, including such internationally renowned names as Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust, Great Ormond Street and Papworth Hospitals, Harley Street clinics, Nuffield Health and Bupa. It also lists sporting organisations like Team GB, Wimbledon Championships, Tottenham Hotspur, England RFU and television’s The World’s Strongest Man amongst its clients, as well as the Royal Air Force, BBC and ITV.

All Plinth 2000 products are CE marked and conform with Medical Directive 93/42/EEC and electrical standard IEC601 Part 1, all of which are accepted worldwide. The luxurious leather-look vinyl upholstery, offered in 18 standard colours, is fire retardant to BS7176 and assessed for ignitability to BS5852, while the material incorporates permanent anti-microbial and anti-fungal additives to inhibit E-Coli, MRSA and C.Diff.

Built to ISO9001 quality assurance standards, Plinth treatment couches feature epoxy powder coated, tubular steel frames, self-lubricating bearings and class-leading single lift mechanisms for outstanding durability and are fitted with stepless hydro-pneumatic gas cylinders, heavy duty retractable castors and either electrical or hydraulic height and angle adjustment.

“All clinicians, healthcare practitioners and therapists demand a firm and stable platform for general treatment and examination techniques, right through to heavy manipulation, and many of our overseas customers find that our couches deliver the performance that locally-made products cannot,” says Niall. “We also offer a guaranteed supply of spares and parts, including replacement upholstery, that keeps our equipment in service for many years, with many of the early models recording an almost 20-year lifespan. So we can confidently claim that our British-made couches are amongst the best in the world.”
